Sindhi
Prosperity
Most Sindhis at similar levels of prosperity
or in parallel businesses meet constantly.
The Harilelas are esteemed as the leading
Sindhi family in Hong Kong, and the most cherised source
of a dinner invitation. The Harilelas entertain hundreds
of guests in their Kowloon Tong Mogul-inspired mansion
owned by the Harilelas every year, and so a large percentage
of the Indian community, as well as non-Indians, have
enjoyed the hospitality.
The Harilelas' mansion, combining Indian,
Chinese, and Western decor, features a sterling silver
chair used by the host at dinner parties, while tendrils
of real gold leaf intertwine around the underside of the
circular glass tables.
The home of a Sindhi Hong Kong expresses
the same elation in unabashed prosperity visible at social
events organised by the Sindhis. When wealth has been
acquired in abundance, Sindhis' home decorations run towards
international gilded chic.
Marks of financial success are European
crystal and gold leaf chandeliers, thick wool Aubusson
carpets, gilded Louis XV chairs, and the odd Chinese item,
often inlaid with gleaming semi-precious stones.
Sindhis decorate the walls with coloured
portraits of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth.
Most impressive stereo equipment is available
in Hong Kong.
Sindhis use recently released videos. The Sindhis nurture
the idea of owning a luxury car.
