Masumi Makhija
Masumi
Makhija, niece of the late filmmaker Gul
Anand (Khatta meetha, Chashme-e-Buddoor,
Jalwa, Hero Hiralal), is big screen bound.
Her debut film, interestingly, is a German
venture - Veit Helmer's Tor zum Himmel (Gate
of Heaven) - which is likely to enter the
Cannes film festival to be held next month.
Her co-star in the film is Valera. Nikolaev
who was Val Kilmer's nemesis in The Saint.
Having
done a stint of modelling and television
(Thoda Hai Thode Ki zaroorat Hai), the
petite Masumi "always wanted to be
an actress." Gate To Heaven came
her way literally at her doorstep. "The
local casting agent put me on to the makers
an I was selected. It was as easy as that,
"she says.
The
film, a love story with Frankfrut airport
as its setting, deals about luggage handlers
and cleaners.
"the
cast includes actors from all over the
globe. The film will be released all over
Europe and later in India."
Incidentally,
Masumi was also one of the presenters
for the Best Non European film award along
with Jeremy Irons at the European Screen
Awards held in Rome in December.
Though
Masumi has had an international debut,
she would prefer to concentrate on Bollywood
now.
She
features in ace cameraman Madhu Ambat's
directoral debut called 1:16 An Ode To
Lost Love produced by NFDC. The film stars
Atul Kulkarni and Gulshan Grover.
Her
other projects include Vishal Bharadwajs
Mian Maqbool which stars Naseeruddin Shah,
Tabu, Irfan Khan besides her sister Shona
Urvashi's directorial debut chupke se,
a Breezy comedy which aill also see the
revival of Gul Anand's banner PLA Entertainment.
