Jairamdas
Doulatram Alamchandani [1891-1979]
A
Political leader, a Social servant and a Scholar
of history. He
was practicing law at Karachi. From young days,
Jairamdas had a patriotic feeling and so he left
the legal profession.
He
took active part in Handhiji's Non-cooperation
movement in 1920, Salt Satyagrah in 1930, and
Quit-India movement in 1920. He was imprisoned
for seven years.
A
trusted lieutenant of Gandhiji who called him
'pure gold'.
In
1929 and again in 1934, he was the General Secretary
of Indian National Congress and injured in police
firing.
Appointed
Governor of Bihar form 1947 to 1948 and Governer
of Assam from 1950 to 1956. Appointed as Food
Minister in Pandit Nehru's Cabinet from 1948 to
1950.
He
was nominated as member of Rajya Sabha in 1957
and again in 1964.
Wrote
many research articles on History of Sindh. He
passed away on 1st March, 1979.
