Making
Inroads
I had also started writing and singing idealistic
songs about construction site workers and hungry children
at a concert when the director, Alyque Padamsee, heard
me and invited me to play the Virgin Mary in his production,
Jesus Christ Superstar. In many ways it
was a turning point in my life! Tony Mayers, a producer
from the BBC, saw me in the play. The BBC was planning
a series of films on six girls from six different
countries and I was chosen as a girl from India. The
Time-Life sponsored film, A Girl
Named Devika, was judged the Best Film in the
series and I got invited to London for the premiere
my first trip outside the country. I still
meet people who remember the film and say that I made
them proud to be Indian.
My Voice Did it
Suresh Bhojwani, my future husband, came to see Jesus
Christ Superstar and decided that I was the
one for him. I got married six months later and all
I took with me was a Moulinex mixer-grinder and a
second hand Noritake dinner set. My in-laws, the Bhojwanis,
very special people, asked me to come with nothing
but myself. I had enough to give, they said! When
Suresh met my father to ask for my hand in marriage,
industrialist met leftist. All my father asked him
was, "What sustains you, young man?" Without
hesitation, Suresh replied, "Sir, the love of
your daughter." He never asked Suresh what he
did. He trusted my judgement in human beings explicitly.
My father taught us the importance of enriching the
mind. We had grown up with very few needs, but what
we did have was plenty of self-esteem and an enthusiasm
for everything we did. And it was with that spirit
that I played the dutiful wife and daughter-in-law,
and produced and nurtured two wonderful children.
Never allowing my new roles to curb my enthusiasm
for things that continued to draw me, whether it was
singing at an Aid Bhopal concert or reviving
khadi with Jaya Bachchan. Raising funds for AIDS with
Richard Gere, being part of Citizens for Peace
during the riots, organising an event to save a heritage
structure in Bombay... I did it all, with the same
passion with which I play wife and mother in the day
and dance the nights away with Suresh at some noisy
nightclub.
My Inward Journey
And somewhere along the way, as I twirled and danced
with abandon, I touched a silence within me. It happened
suddenly and without warning. A stillness, more exciting
than anything I had ever experienced, triggering off
my inward journey. I have always been hungry to experience
whatever life had planned for me. Always accepting
whatever came my way. And along the way, I know I
have confused most people. Is Devika Bhojwani
a singer, an actress, a khadi designer, a restaurateur
or a TV producer? How is anyone to know who
I am, when I am only just beginning to find myself?
I am living each day as a gift as I continue my celebration
of life! |
