ORNAMENTS

Ornaments were the essential feature of the Sindhi women's dress. They often wore very colstly gold ornaments, studded with diamonds and precious stones, according to the economic status of the family. These ornaments in addition to physically shackling the woman also symbolished her intellectual and emotional bondage to man. More the ornaments on the body of a woman, the bigger was the status of her husbands's family.

Gone are the days of Nath, Bulo, Panzeb and Chher Diamond nose studs are more in vogue today ladies are more interested in ears studs double and tripple even. The mangalsutra is now taken to be a sign of married lady. Diamond and gold sets are preferred for parties and social gatherings. As for working women, they prefer to wear artifical and American diamond jewellery, as it is cheaper and safe. Glass bangles, toe ring, payals(both gold and silver) bracelets and gold chains, laxmi mala, Motian ji mala Jhumika, Dura, Phuli are still in fashion and are part of Sindhi women's dress today. Preference is also for matching jewellery and this includes plastic brass, silver and shell jewellery.

Ornaments used by Sindhis are a significant part of our culture, especially for our women folks. Sindhi Zewar-a or Ggah-a (ornaments) for different parts of the body are given in these pages. Different and varied ornaments are used by Sindhis for the head, ear, nose, neck, arm, hands, feet and so on. The ornaments of the head are:
Aali, Tiko, Jhumar-a, Tiklo, Kundho, Munhan DanNi, SagGiyoon, Chotee-a Phul-u, Bakal-u, Clip-u, Taaj-u

Aali - This is worn on the center of the forehead by girls and unwed young women and is usually made of silver. This is mostly worn by working class girls.

Tiko - This is same as Aali except its design is more modern and is mostly made of gold. This is mostly worn by non-working class girls and younger women.

Jhoomar - This is made of gold and is worn by women on the right hand side of the head. It consists of a hook, panryoon and luDans (small hanging balls).

Tiklo - Tiklo is similar to Aali and Tiko but is made of gold and is worn by women to be wed.It is worn a little bit higher on the forehead almost at the front hairline.

Kundho - This is a hook usually made of silver that is worn in the hair to help hold a weighty Natha in the nose.

Munhan DaNi (Face Chain) - This is a chain used to hold Natha and is attached to the Tiklo or directly to the hair. Made of gold or silver.

SaGiyoon - Made of silver and used to fold hair into a Chotee.

Choteea Phulu - Golden or silver flower hairband

Bukalu - Hair buckle made of gold or silver.

Clipu - Hair clip made of gold or silver.

Taju - Golden crown
