DR.
G. S. SAINANI
Hon. Physician
of Jaslok Hospital Dr. G. S. Sainani, was awarded
the Padamshri in the year 2000 at the hands of
President of India. Then he became the consultant
to the armed forces. He was thereafter felicitated
by different organizations such as Finolex Group,
V. P. Naik Pratistha at Raj Bhavan, Sindhu Academy,
Sindhu Samaj, Sindhi New Year (Chetichand) Foundation
at Pune. He has also received such prestigious
awards like Dr. B. C. Roy Award, Priyadarshini
Lifetime Achievement Award and has delivered several
national orations including Dr. B. C. Roy, Achanta
Lakshmi Pathi orations etc. Apart from being the
past president of 12 national associations, he
has written and edited prestigious medical books,
journals and over 500 research papers.
Dr. Gurumukh S. Sainani was born
in a middle class family in 1931. He was the youngest
of five bothers and three sisters and was brought
up by his uncle. He was a meritorious student
who was granted with a double promoition from
10th to 12th , which he passed form Mumbai University
with distinction in Maths and Science. He joined
D. J. Sindh College at Karachi. He was in a refugee
camp in Nagpur where he studied in a Science College.
He was awarded for passing with first class, at
the hands of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the then
Prime Minister of India. In his final year of
MBBS, he received the Prince of Wales Prize and
later he secured a postgraduate seat for MD. His
performance in the Public Service Commission got
him the post of Assistant Professor in Medicine
which led to his promotion as Professor and Head
of the Department of Medicine at the young age
of 32. Soon after this, he married Dr. Pushpa
Dudani and was blessed with three children: Renuka
(ophthalmologist in Australia), Rajesh (an MD)
and Ashwini (post-graduate in ophthalmology).
Dr.
Sainani received training in cardiology at Chicago
Medical School and Mt. Sinai Hospital at Chicago.
Then he wrote a book 'A Primer of Cardiac Diagnosis'
dedicating it to his daughter Renuka. In January
1969, he joined as Director Professor of Medicine,
first at Nagpur, then at Pune and finally at Mumbai.
Dr. Sainani was a consultant to Byculla Hospital,
Central Railway and State Bank of India. He is
the first medical man in the entire history to
get D. Sc. by research.
