Acharya
Jiwatram Bhagwandas Kripalani [1888-1982]
A
close associate of Mahatma Gandhi and a top ranking
leader in the freedom movement.
Only Sindhi who
became the President of Indian National Congress.
Passed B.A.
in 1908 and M.A. in 1911 from Ferguson College,
Pune.
In 1917 when
Gandhiji visites Muzzarfarpur in connection with
Neel Satyagrah, Kriplani was his trusted lieutenant.
In 1920 hr
joined Gandhijis non-cooperation movement
and was imprisoned in 1921.
He became
Acharya of Gujarat Vdyapeeth, Ahmedabad in 1922.
He became
the first Chairman of SRC Ltd. in 1948.
He was elected
unopposed to Lok Sabha in 1952 & 1957 elections.
Till 1971, hr remained member of Lok Sabha.
He remained
true to Gandhian values till the end of his life
and passed away on 19th March, 1982 at Ahmedabad.
Government
of India has issued a postal stamp in his memory.
