Business
is a major area in which Sindhis have contributed to the
prosperity of Hong Kong. Sindhis have generated trade
links with India, America, China and the West has poured
millions of dollars into the territory, providing jobs
for many Hong Kong Chinese.
Sindhis
are also big investors in the real estate and shipping
sectors in Hong Kong. Since the influx of several thousands
of Sindhi businessmen to Hong Kong in the 1950s, the position
of the Indian business community has gradually strengthened.
Sindhis
controlled a good percentage of Hong Kong's export trade,
amounting to several billion dollars. Indian firms in
Hong Kong hold assets or turnover of several crores per
year.
These
include the Harilela Holdings, The Hind Corporation, run
by the Marwari family of Jhunjhunwalas, the Sonex Corporation
of the Makhijas, Multitex Limited of Haresh Mohanani,
H Daya International Co Limited, Chellarams, and others.
Other
Sindhis as well have done outstandingly well in the international
trade, earning more than 100 billion Hong Kong dollars.
The
strength of Sindhi businessmen in Hong Kong also included
the readiness to seek untried trade opportunities, and
to work through an international network of other Indians.
Hong
Kong Sindhis have also tried to work with Indian government
officials to ease restrictions on imports into India.
