The Indian presence in Kuwait goes back to the days when the grandfather of the present Emir - the ruler of Kuwait used to sit on a charpai with Mr. Jashanmal Jhangiani for the evening kahwah (cup of coffee) and chit chat. The population of Kuwait was 40,000 and young Jashanmal, having established himself in Bahrain, had come to Kuwait to open a new branch which was in 1935. Mr Jashanmal Jhangiani opened the first department store in Kuwait that year. His son Naraindas lived for some time in Kuwait, then moved to Bahrain. Today Tony, one of the grandsons of Mr Jashanmal Jhangiani, lives in Kuwait.

In 1950, only about 50,000 people lived in kuwait. Record show there were only 4000 Indians in Kuwait at the end of 1958 when its population was 1,00,000. Now kuwait is one of the richest nations in worls with the highest per capita income. The Population of Kuwait is about 2.2 milion
