in Singapore
The people of Indian origin, numbering 200,000, form eight percent of the population of Singapore Majority of the Indians are of Tamil origin. Sindhis and Gujaratis are in garments and electronics, engaged in wholesale as well as retail business. Many Sindhis went to Singapore before the World War II.
The prominent firms were Wassiamal Assoomull, J Kimatrai, Khemchand Sons, J T Chainrai, K A J Chotirmull, Jamatmal Gurbamal (Melwanis) D R Binwani, B H T Daulatram Jubilee Silk Store (Dalamals) N Ramchand (Nihalchand) U Gulabra, Crown Silk Store, Modern Silk Store, Taj Mahal Silk Store, Singapore Silk Store, Parmanand Bros., M Odarmal, etc. There were 17 firms, about 150 persons, and six families only had settled then, whereas now in 2007, there are 5,000 persons and 600 families. The prominent firms are about 450.
