Education
of children was a matter of prime importance
for the Sindhis. Teachers, educationists
and social workers all considered 'Vidya-daan'
the highest mode of service. School after
school was started in the various camps
and areas where Sindhis were concentrated.
Following new school opened
New Era High School, E.E.S High School and
Netaji High School Ulhasnagar and Sind Cosmopolitan
High School at Chembur, Bombay.
Kids
of tender age stated selling sweets, combs,
pens, newspaper and haberdashery in the
local trains on Bombay-Kalyan route. Women
also started preparing papds, Kachries,
vadis and other snacks at home for sale
by the menfolk to well to do Sindhis families.
This was all to keep the wolf away from
the door.
Rehabilitation
department ran a center marketing handiwork
of the Sindhi ladies, but it had to close
down soon as government EARLY LIFE IN SINDHI
CAMPS Sindhis faced hard life in camps and
oher early settlements and went through
harrowing experiences, physical as well
as mental. Landlords who possessed acres
of land in Sind, were dumped in stables,
Zamindars who had dozens of servants at
their beck and call had to stand in queues
for free ration, water and common toilets.
Could not run it viably. Prime Minister,
Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru sent a cheque of
Rs. 1200/- to Sind Sewa Samiti Nagar, Kolwada,
Bombay from The P.M. Relief fund. The Sindhis
however, being convinced of the inadequacy
of the help extended by the government chose
to depend on their own internal resources
and hard work for their won rehabilitation.
Sadhu T.L. Vaswani, Prof. Ram Punjwani,
Master Chandur, Sassanand Jadugar and many
more eminents Sindhis kept on inspiring
the Sindhis to be self reliant and self-dependant
in he mater of standing on their own. From
various platforms these greatmen tried their
utmost to keep up the morale of common Sindhis,
with success.
For the all-rounddevelopment
of the Sindhi children the school started
celebrating annual days when dramas, skirts,
debates and sports etc. were held. Thus,
the era of Sindhi one act plays leading
later to drams started in India.
