Shri Ram Bulchand Jethmalani

Country’s finest criminal lawyer, upholder of human rights, crusader for justice, vigorous campaigner against corruption in high places, Senior Advocate of Supreme Court, Shri Ram Jethmalani is one of the two topmost Sindhi luminaries on the firmament of Indian politics today.

He was born on 14th September 1923 at shikapur (Sindh). He obtained his LLB degree from Bombay University in 1944. He specialized in Criminal Law, Constitutional Law and Law of Detention. He became Chairman of Bar Council of India, in 1973.

Shri Jethmalani is a fearless person and has courted controversy with his deeds of courage, conviction and conscience. He received the Human Rights Award, initiated by Worls Peace through law, for his fight against the authoritarianism. His basic loyality is to the truth, in what he believes to be right or wrong.

Ram Jethmalani was a elected Member of Lok Sabha from 1977 to 1984 (Two terms) from the North West Bombay Constituency. He was the National Vice President of BJP and was in Janata Dal in 1988, when he was elected to Rajya Sabha from Karnatak State. He was re-elected to Rajya Sabha from Karnatak state. He was re-elected to Rajya Sabha from maharashtra (1993-96). In March 1996, when BJP came to power he was included in the cabinet as union Minister of Law, Justice and Company Affairs. In March 1998, BJP again came to power and Mr. Jethmalani became Cabinet Minister of Urban Affairs and Employment, the post he resigned soon after, because of the differences with PM. Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, on the matter of principal.

Mr. Jethmalani has remained a staunch supporter of Sindhi language and Sindhiyat, the causes, most dear to his heart. Decade back he had successfully fought with the Government to the day to retain Sindhi Arabic Script, which was being hijacked by the supporters of Devnagri Script. Recently he was again in forefront in a fight to retain “Sindh” in our National Anthem. He also stood like a rock, when the order for demolition for unauthorized structure in Ulhasnagar became a burning issue.

On the auspicious occasion of his 83rd birthday “Global Sindhi Council” was formed under his leadership, to bring scattered Sindhis of the World on one common platform, in order to keep their language, cultural heritage and identity, intact.

Out of his four siblings, two Mahesh and Rani have followed in his footsteps by joining legal profession, however his favorite one is Shobha, a doctor in U.S.A. with their two mothers Durga and Ratna all the children with their parents have lived a harmonious life, with owner’s pride and neighbour’s envy.
