Shri Ram Bulchand Jethmalani
Countrys
finest criminal lawyer, upholder of human rights,
crusader for justice, vigorous campaigner against
corruption in high places, Senior Advocate of
Supreme Court, Shri Ram Jethmalani is one of the
two topmost Sindhi luminaries on the firmament
of Indian politics today.
He
was born on 14th September 1923 at shikapur (Sindh).
He obtained his LLB degree from Bombay University
in 1944. He specialized in Criminal Law, Constitutional
Law and Law of Detention. He became Chairman of
Bar Council of India, in 1973.
Shri
Jethmalani is a fearless person and has courted
controversy with his deeds of courage, conviction
and conscience. He received the Human Rights Award,
initiated by Worls Peace through law, for his
fight against the authoritarianism. His basic
loyality is to the truth, in what he believes
to be right or wrong.
Ram
Jethmalani was a elected Member of Lok Sabha from
1977 to 1984 (Two terms) from the North West Bombay
Constituency. He was the National Vice President
of BJP and was in Janata Dal in 1988, when he
was elected to Rajya Sabha from Karnatak State.
He was re-elected to Rajya Sabha from Karnatak
state. He was re-elected to Rajya Sabha from maharashtra
(1993-96). In March 1996, when BJP came to power
he was included in the cabinet as union Minister
of Law, Justice and Company Affairs. In March
1998, BJP again came to power and Mr. Jethmalani
became Cabinet Minister of Urban Affairs and Employment,
the post he resigned soon after, because of the
differences with PM. Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee,
on the matter of principal.
Mr.
Jethmalani has remained a staunch supporter of
Sindhi language and Sindhiyat, the causes, most
dear to his heart. Decade back he had successfully
fought with the Government to the day to retain
Sindhi Arabic Script, which was being hijacked
by the supporters of Devnagri Script. Recently
he was again in forefront in a fight to retain
Sindh in our National Anthem. He also
stood like a rock, when the order for demolition
for unauthorized structure in Ulhasnagar became
a burning issue.
On
the auspicious occasion of his 83rd birthday Global
Sindhi Council was formed under his leadership,
to bring scattered Sindhis of the World on one
common platform, in order to keep their language,
cultural heritage and identity, intact.
Out
of his four siblings, two Mahesh and Rani have
followed in his footsteps by joining legal profession,
however his favorite one is Shobha, a doctor in
U.S.A. with their two mothers Durga and Ratna
all the children with their parents have lived
a harmonious life, with owners pride and
neighbours envy.
