Racing was also a big sport in Sind but not
car racing, mind you - horse and bull racing.
As is evident in old coins and seals found from
excavations of ancient civilisations - horses,
bulls and camels commanded a place of pride.
Not only were these animals helpful in domestic
chores but also proved to be a source of mobility
for their owners.
And with time, racing these animals turned into
a lucrative sport and they were specially trained
for racing. In fact Jacobabad in Sind played
host to an annual animal fair where people from
all over Sind used to take part with their prize
horses and bulls in races. The English and the
local elite of Jacobabad used to host lavish
parties in the nights during these days. This
fair used to attract people from nearby Khurasan
and Qalat which were famous for their breed
of horses just as Jaisalmer was famous for its
fast camels and goats. Huge tents used to be
erected at the venues where the more fortunate
took seats to view the proceedings. The animals
were decorated in all their finery and the winners
were taken in a parade through out the town
in a circus like procession complete with shehnais
in attendance and flowers being showered on
them like royalty in pomp and gaiety. The whole
town wore a festive look during this event with
gypsies and other small traders coming in from
various parts of Sind to sell their wares to
the huge crowds gathered for the event.
