Shikarpur
used to play host to an annual function of classical
music during the days of Holi which was known
as the Holi-a-jo-Hando. This gathering of some
of the most elite classical singers and musical
singers and musicians was a unique event in
not only in the history of Sind but also that
of India.
Participants
from the courts and darbars of a kings and royalties
used to travel all the way to take part and
all the respected musically inclined gharanas
used to send their emissaries to represent their
name in the event. Performing here was not open
to all and Sundry and one had to prove his bonafides
before even being considered. Those lucky enough
to perform were regarded as talents exponents
of the art form and gained recognition throughout
the world on the basis of their performance
in the Hando. Popularly known as 'Pandit Ranwaldas
Hando' this event had the patronage of the rich
and elite of Shikarpur who sponsored this event
and spent unheard of sums to get a reputed artiste
artiste to perform in Shikarpur. A performance
here acted as a stamp of approval from the highest
pillars of song and music, which has seen almost
all the greats of yesteryears performing in
Shikarpur. Significant among them were Bhaskar
Rao, Krishna Rao, Pandit Vishnu Digambar Palaskar
and his disciple Vinayak Rao Patwardhan, Narayan
Rao Vyas all from Pune; Bade & Chhote Ghulam
Ali, Allahrakha Khan, renowned qawals and thumribaaz
of Lucknow, court jewels from Bhopal, Baroda,
Jaipur; well known classical singers of Punjab
- Dharampal, Ratan, bhai Khastur and others.
Such a gathering of stars ended up with scintillating
performances on one single stage and had the
audience spellbound till the wee hours of morning.
Side by side
these event also gave a wide exposure to Sindhi
singers and musicians who got an opportunity
to perform alongside some of the finest talent
from all over the country. Tabla players like
Seth Chatanram, Pandit Khushiram, Sunderdas
Massand (saraangi), Pandit Biharilal, Maharaj
Nandlal Bolakani, Seth Kimatrai Raheja (singers)
all of them who got a chance to display their
talent. Apart from these, the Hando used to
attract Sindhi singers and musicians from all
over Sind like Master Chander, Khanuram, Mulibai
and Jeevnibai
