The
general impression in Sind in the field of music
was that the singers could only sing couplets
and lyrical compositions (Baits & Kaafees)
in rhyme. But a genius like Shah Abdul Latif,
one of the three main pillars of Sindhi poetry
alongwith Sachal and Sami, proved cynics wrong
with his compositions based on virtually every
major raag that music had to offer.
sThe power of poetry set to
tune in pure classical melodies redefined the
annals of Sindhi music and became a trend for
music lovers to come. Based on popular raags
like bhairavi, yaman, kalyan, ramkali, etc.
Shah Abdul gave classical music his own contributions
like raag samundi, husseini, raano, suhini,
maruee, etc.
These achievements hold good
in their own light because the climatic conditions
in Sind were not conducive to classical singers
given the extreme conditions of heat and cold.
Voices like delicate plants have to be nurtured
which require an ideal atmosphere. But these
conditions notwithstanding, the singers of Sind
overcame these hurdles through stringent and
dedicated practice. In fact the music of Sind
is more soulful and contains a major influence
of sorrow and romance as compared to other dialects.
Bhagat Kanwarram and Master Chander are two
best examples of this particular point of reasoning
as they were the masters of the art of soulful
singing.
