SAINT HARIRAM BRAHMCHARI (1869-1947)
Saint
Hariram was born in a small village 'Bhingo Bahan'
in the Khairpur State, in the house
of Bhai Tanwar Ram, who himself was a great saint.
Tanwar Ram had four sons and the youngest one
was named as Jeevat. When he was nine years old
his father took Jeevat to saint Kriparam of Bhirya
village and told him, 'Sai this child is yours.
Take him in your care." His Guru was very
happy with the services of Jeevat. In due course
of time he gave him the name of 'Bhai Hariram'.
One day when the
Guru was conducting a Kirtan on sex as one of
the five evils of body, Bhai Hariram got up in
the middle of discourse and went out to a secluded
place. Considering that the foundation of all
sex is the reproductive organ of the body, he
made a hole in his organ with a rapier. Blood
started flowing and he felt his head reeling.
But not caring for anything, he put a bandage
to the wounded organ, came out and sat in the
Kirtan. The Guru asked him, "Bhai Hariya,
today you are looking indisposed." He replied,
"Guru Saheb, you know everthing." The
Guru said, "You are great and your parents
who have given birth to you are also great. You
will be considered foremost among Brahmacharis."
Soon, after the death of his Guru, saint Hariram
became the 'Gadesar', where he continued for nearly
35 years. He believed in simple living and used
to wear hand woven Khadi clothes. His food was
also simple --Jowar Roti and Sai Bhaji. He was
sweet tongued and possessed a melodious voice.
He used to compose poems which were appreciated
by one and all.
On 19th June 1947
early in the morning he took leave of his disciple
Bhai Sewaram and went the way of all flesh at
the age of 78 years. After partition his disciple
saint Sewaram is continuing in the darbar in Bhilwara
of Udaipur State.
