Social life of Sindhis goes back to the Vedic age and Sindhis lived together at a tiny place known as gotra or goshta - village. Sindhis, belonging to different sects and status, were very common in social affairs. Irrespective of its size, each village had a panchayat and every one was supposed to be a member. Though there was no membership fee, every member had to pay the Laagas - contributions - to the panchayat at the time of marriage, janiyo and chhathi - naming ceremony.

All the members elected a senior, suitable chief known as mukhi and few members of the committee to assist the chief. Each panchayat stocked utensils, durries faras to be given to the members on social occasions. The mukhi, on behalf of the Panchayat, used to receive and give offerings to any visiting sadhu, saint, scholar, artist or bhagat. The decisions of the Panchas were binding on all the members as they say Panchan Mein Parmeshwar.
