Chembur Camp
This camp consisted of military barracks
and was equipped with electricity, water and sanitary
fixtures. Anti-cholera and anti-typhoid inoculations
were administered to the inmates by the public health
staff. Sanitary
arrangements were attended to by the Ghatkopar Municipality.
A dispensary, three honorary doctors for day and
night attendance, nurses etc. was established. The
Government opened grain shops and charcoal shops
in the camp and a special post office was installed.
Those who were too poor or unable to make their
own cooking arrangements could take advantage of
the common free kitchen run by the Hindustan Merchants
Association on behalf of the Government.
The
kitchen was conducted for the first few days by
the Ghatkopar Congress Committee, which then continued
to supply free milk to children below three years
and bread to old ones. The committee also supplied
clothes, utensils and chatais to the needy. Sale
of milk and provisions were arranged. A school for
refugee children was opened within the camp. |
