Thadomal Shahani Engineering College
The
Hyderabad (Sind) National Collegiate Board was established
in 1949 under the visionary leadership of late Barrister
Hotchand Advani and Principal K. M. Kundnani.
The educational institutions under the board rapidly
grew into an impressive agglomeration encompassing
various branches of knowledge. In the year 1983, a
valuable feather was added to its cap in the form
of an engineering college and, with the present scenario,
institutions under the HSNC Board represent an ideal
university setup within the aegis of the University
of Mumbai
Since 1989 Prof. Kranti Kumar is the Principal of
the college.
With generous donations from Mumbai based philonthrophist
K. T. Shahani, Thadomal Shahani Engineering College
(TSEC) was born and on October 1, 1983 it admitted
its first batch of one hundred and eighty students.
Anticipating growing demands from the industry in
upcoming disciplines of engineering and technology,
TSEC soon established departments of Electronics Engineering,
Computer Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Biomedical
Engineering. Till 1989, TSEC was housed in a picturesque
location facing the Arabian Sea at Worli. Then it was
shifted to its present location at Bandra.
Realising that floor space is a costly commodity in
a city like Mumbai, every square inch of the college
building is utilised most judiciously and rather optimally,
thus providing all modern educational amenities and
infrastructure.
TSEC is an affiliate to the University of Mumbai and
it has earned recognition from AICTE (Government of
India). It has been awarded national level accreditation
by the Institute of Engineers (India).
TSEC is housed in a six-storey building and on any
normal working day, it engages over a thousand students.
The present faculty strength is about eighty five
and there are roughly one hundred supporting staff
members.
The college faculty is well qualified and experienced;
some of them hold the Doctorate and the Master of
Engineering degrees.
The respective laboratories in all departments are
well equipped and we constantly strive to bring in
state-of-the-art experimental set-ups.Over the years,
our examination results have been among the best in
the university and very often, our students top the
merit list in the University of Mumbai.
As far as extra curricular activities are concerned,
we have reason to be proud on several counts. In 1990
a student branch of IEEE(USA) was established at TSEC
which has presently grown into four chapters
Computer Engineering
Communication Engineering
Industrial Electronics
Engineering in Medicine and Biology.
Under the continued guidance of a Branch Counsellor,
IEEE has regularly organised seminars and invited
talks, paper contests and techno-quiz competitions,
industrial visits and project-mania exhibitions.
The excellent work done by our student branch has
been internationally recognised on two occasions :
the Vincent Bendix Award of Allied Corporation (USA)
in 1991and Outstanding Branch Counsellor Region 10
(Asia Pacific) Award in 1996. TSEC also has active
chapters of IIche, IE(I) and ISTE . Our students regularly
participate in competitions held by other professional
bodies and very often they bring laurels to TSEC.
· In the inter-collegiate sports and cultural competitions,
TSEC students have created an indelible mark.
· Last year we won the prestigious Literary Trophy
at Malhar and this year placed third overall at the
popular college festival.
· The college awards a number of prizes to its students
such as gold medals instituted in the names of Barrister
H.G. Advani and Principal K. M. Kundnani for the best
all rounder boy and girl students and topper in each
class in each examination. These prizes are given
away at the annual day function.
TSEC boasts of an orchestra and two of our students
are national level badminton champions.
Outside the college too, our students perform their
social obligations remarkably well. We often come
across media reports such as TSEC student returns
huge cash found in train compartment, TSEC students
- youngest girl driver and navigator in car rally,
TSEC student - saviour to industrialist's bereaved
family, TSEC student elected to US university senate
and so on. The TSEC faculty and its employees do regularly
contribute to the betterment of the institution.
· In order to update their technical expertise and
to learn new pedagogical skills, the college regularly
sponsors the faculty to attend refresher conferences
and higher degree programs at premier institutions
all over India.
· A few faculty members have presented papers at renowned
conferences. Some senior teachers are often invited
to present their papers at seminars and conferences.
A couple of short term courses and seminars have been
held successfully at TSEC. Through projects and consultation,
faculty generates valuable technical information.
Some of our laboratory staff have attended refresher
courses conducted by other universities in India.
· In addition to modern academic laboratories , TSEC
also boasts of many other amenities. The college library
stocks around ten thousand titles (text books and
reference books). We regularly subscribe to 150 renowned
technical journals especially all IEEE publications.
TSEC houses an air-conditioned Seminar Hall equipped
with modern projection facilities. To facilitate on-campus
emplyment for the outgoing students, TSEC has a full
time Training and Placement Officer.
· Our students occupy important technical and managerial
positions in reputed industrial houses all over India.
Shri Ashok Advani and Principal J. K. Bhambhani, President
and Secretary of the HSNC Board respectively take
a keen interest in the development of TSEC. The college
regularly updates its stock of laboratory equipment
and library books. For the benefit of the students
and the employees, through its Academic Committee,
HSNC Board has opened new vistas in International
Education.
The management has immediate plans to augment the
floor space .In fact, AICTE has already approved a
new degree program in information technology in TSEC
starting from 1997-98.
With gifted students and dedicated employees, TSEC
is confident of its ability to make valuable contributions
to high technology for national development .
