ORIGIN AND GROWTH

The Ashram owes its origin to a miracle performed by Yogiraj Sadguru Acharya Swami Bankhandiji Maharaj whose spiritual power cured the son of Dady Shet, a Parsi Philanthropist, of an incurable disease. In gratitude for the Divine Grace, Dady Shet, made a donation of a sprawling plot of land to the Yogiraj for founding the Ashram in Bombay. The lighting of 'Dhooni' (perpetual sacred flameh yogic powers of swami Bankhandiji Maharaj, in 1818 marked the establishment of the Ashram. The flame is still aglow radiating its message its message of socio-religious and cultural salvation of mankind.

Five years later, in 1823, the Yogiraj founded Shri Sadhubella Tirath in Sukkur as well as Shri Sadhubela Ashram in Bombay which subsequently attracted thousands of followers from all corners of the country to form the nucleus for a religious, socio-cultural renaissance which made rapid strides during the time of Acharya Shri 108 Swami Harinamdasji Maharaj the 8th Mahant in the line of succession, from 1893 to 1949. At the time of India's partition, the property of ShriSadhubella Tirth at Sukkur alone was officially valued at Rs. 35 million. After the partition the main center of the Ashram activity was shifted to Bombay by the 9th Mahant Rajarshi Acharya Shri Swami Ganeshdasji Maharaj, who has been leading the Ashram into a countrywide network of a large number of branches and autonomous trusts, active in spheres of medical treatment, education and even agriculture.
