The total strength of this big city is nearly 28 lakhs, including 80,000 Sindhis. Since the City occupies a big geographical area, Sindhis are staying different localities such as Jeri Patka, Mekosa Baug, Kotia Colony, Itwari, Tulsinagar, Shantinagar, Khamia, etc. They have a number of Sindhi Associations and one Central Sindhi Panchayat represented by Shri Shravankumar Madnani as President and Shri C. L. Menghrajar, I as Secretary. In addition, they have one Naga Vidarbha Panchayat representing whole Vidarbha territory, whose President and Secretary respectively are SIShri Vijaykumar Kevalramani and Pratab Motwani. Bharatiya Sindhu Sabha is also active here. Each Sindhi organization is trying its level best tow ork for the community in its own filed. The city has many Primary, Secondary Schools & Jr. Colleges for boys and girls under Sindhi management. However, the arrangement of teaching Sindhi Subject (Devanagiri) is only n one “Mahatma Gandhi Sindh Centenial High School” whose principal is respected Sh. Deepaj Bajaj. Vidya Samiti’s 4-5 Schools are managed by Sindhis but they don’t teach Sindhi even as one of the subjects. The city has many Sindhi Dharamshallas along with Temples. Such as those of sant Satramdas, Baba Hardasram, Bhagat KanwarRam (Gandhi Baug), Shri Manghanmai Vensimal (Lal Ganj)m Sh. Sanwaldas Devani (Near Rly Station.) Sh. Moollchand & Sh. Hiranand (Both Dharmshallas at Jeri Patka) as well as Sh. Chetandas Lakhwani Hall and Prem Prakash Mandir (Queta Coloy Itwari) etc. It is also encouraging to note that the main traders (e.g. Stationery, cloth etc.) are under the hands of Sindhis here, though they are hardly 3% of the total population of the city. Hence, they command a good respect among the local people particularly when Sindhis’ have good relations with them. They are mainly in business and are quite well off on the whole. Nearyly 75% of Sindhis speak in their own ancient Sindhi Language among themselves & at homes, particularly in “Jeri Patka Colony where a passer by feels Sindhi atmosphere. Sh. Rochiram Thawani, a veteran freedom fighter and the pride of the community & Nation, is also staying here. The total population of this Capital City of M.P. is 24 lakhs including 21/2 lakhs Sindhis. The city can be divided into 2 areas, i.e. Bairagarh (Suburbs) and main city for convenience sake as shown below:
(i) Bairagarh: This suburb is better known as Sant Hirdaram Nagar or Sant Nagri with total population of over 1 lakh which includes 80% Sindhis. They speak practically Sindhi only among themselves. Hence while passing from this Suburb, one feels as if one passing from mini Sindh. They are mainly in business. They have many private and Govt. Schools with Sindhi as one of the Subjects. They celebrate annual festivals such as Chetichand, Dassera (with procession), Sant Kanwar Ram, Jayanti, Raja vir Jayanti ect. They have many Sindhi Associations such as Puj Siradhi Panchayat (President Shri Sabu Rijhwani and Secretary Shri Madhu Chandwani), Sindhu Samaj, Navyuvak Sabha, Navjeevan Samiti and Sanskruti Kala Mandir, etc. Every organization is doing a lot of social work in its own field. They have 4 Sindhi Dharmasalas in the names of Swami Shanti Prakash, Sai Assandas, Daulatram (for marriage purposes) and Foot Kath Dharamshallas (for Marriage and Lodging). They have many temples such as Jhulelal Mandir, Raja Vir Mandir and Sant Kanwar Ram Mandir etc. Pradesh Times and Lion City (weekly) are published from here. They have 2 Sindhi Municipal Councillors i.e. Shri Rajesh Hingorani and Shri Ishwar Nathani. The description of this Suburb would be incomplete without mention of Sant Hirdaramji who attended Mahasamadhi recently after completing centenary and whose name is given to this Suburb. With his blessings and inspiration, many actvities are goin on since very very long time here for-all the communities such as free water supply, education, financial and medical help. Vocational training centre, eye hospital where there is arrangement of free operations and free lodging and boarding for patients throughout the year. All such information is available from their quarterly magazine ‘Anmol Moti’ under Jeevan Seva Saristhan’. This Suburb is “Sant Nagri” in real sense.
(ii) Main City: Here Sindhis have many Association such as Sindhi Central Panchayat (President Shri Kanayalal Israni, Secretary Shri Dev Jhurani – a Press Reporter), Sindhi Vikas Samiti, Bharatiya Sindhu Sabha, Sindhu Social Circle, Sindhu Bhavan Trust etc. each organization is busy in doing social work in its field for the benefit of the community. They have Sindhi managed schools i.e. Sindhu Vidyalaya and Lal Sai Vidya Mandir but without teaching Sindhi as one of the subjects. Nearly 40% of them speak in Sindhi at home and among themselves. They are mainly in business and celebrate annual festivals along with their counterparts at Sant Hirdaram Nagar as mentioned above. The periodicals published by them are Akhand Sindhu Sansar, challenge, Sindhu Dhara, Bhojanchal Times, Amar-E-Hind, etc. They have 2 Sindhi Dharamshallas namely Atalram Sindhi Dharamshalla Trust and Manwani Panjumal sindhi Dharamsalla – both for lodging and marriage purposes. They have famous temples sucha as Durga Mandir (Sindhi Colony), Jhulelal Mandir (Govindpura) etc., Being a Capital and a big ancient city, there are many attractive worth seeing tourist places which can be seen (with the help of Govt. Tourist Dept.), which no one can afford to miss. Religious and Social Organizations
There are more than twenty educational social and
religious associations of Sindhis in Nagpur city
As regards educational institutions, perhaps, Nagpur
might be next to Bombay. There are three full fledged
colleges, five junior colleges, nine High schools
and scores of Primary and K.G. classes, run by Sindhis.
Very little is known outside Nagpur, as to what
noble work, these Sindhi institutes are doing at
Nagpur.
