Sindhis have a predominant presence at Ahmedabad
in Gujarat. The Sindhis' contribution on the education
field at Ahmedabad is noteworthy.
Sindhis
have 13 AMC-run Sindhi medium schools. Almost 100
teachers are in excess. However, the hitherto thriving
educational scenario started a declining trend.
A
typical example is Sardarnagar, where the school
has 11 teachers whereas there are only 19 students.
The
situation of the private schools also is the same.
Ten years ago, Lal Darwaja could boast of Sind Modern
High School; a Sindhi medium school. But, today
it has only 20 students in Class XI and X, without
having fresh admissions. The High Secondary section
has only 20 students in class IX and X, according
to teacher V C Pahilajani.
Mr
Sharma attributes the reason for the declining Sindhi
educational scenario to the absence of job prospects
who complete their studies in Sindhi medium.
The
focus on business could be another reason, as many
Sindhis think that the attention has to be more
on business in order to enable the children to come
up in the financial strata.
The
persons who can read and write Sindhi at Ahmedabad
will be at a premium.
Efforts are to be made to sustain the availability
of teachers, though their services could be made
use of today.
This
year there are only nine applications to the Primary
Teacher Certificate (PTC) course in Sindhi medium,
wheras 40 could be admitted.
Today,
there are ten sindhi medium schools at Ahmedabad.
Of these seven are Higher Secondary Schools, which
train 350 students each year.
